‘They played to win’: Chicago White Sox get timely hitting and pitching in a 6-5 victory against the Atlanta Braves

Jake Burger got in an 0-2 hole against Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider with two outs in the sixth inning of Saturday’s tied game at Truist Park. What does one do in that spot against the pitcher with the most strikeouts in the majors?“I was just staying short and not trying to get too big,” Burger said. That approach worked. Burger connected on the next pitch, driving the ball over the right-field wall for a go-ahead solo homer.A night after getting blanked, the Sox bounced back against one of the top pitchers in the National League and beat the Braves 6-5 in front of 43,344.“He’s a great pitcher,” Burger said. “We went into the game knowing we had our hands full and we’re going to have to buy into our approach and make sure we’re swinging at the right pitch. Fortunately it fell our way today.”Strider struck out five of the first six batters. The Sox put together a series of nice at-bats in the third.Zach Remillard and...Orioles’ Cedric Mullins exits game vs. Marlins with right quadriceps injury: ‘We’re hoping we caught a break there’

Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins exited Saturday’s game against the Miami Marlins in the second inning with right quadriceps tightness, the team announced. After hitting an RBI single in the second inning, Mullins sprinted around the bases on a near-double from Jordan Westburg that was ruled foul. Mullins appeared to motion toward the dugout before gingerly walking off the field.Rookie Colton Cowser, who made his major league debut last week, replaced Mullins on the base paths and in center field. The appearance marks Cowser’s Camden Yards debut. The lower-body injury could be extra concerning for Mullins, who missed a month earlier this season with a right groin strain he suffered May 29. That injury also came on the bases, as the 28-year-old speedster was placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering the strain while sprinting to first base.“We’ll check on it tomorrow,” manager Brandon Hyde said after the Orioles’ 6-5 win. “I think ...Aaron Boone sees Giancarlo Stanton getting where he needs to be: ‘Sometimes it’s taken him a little bit’

DENVER — It’s taken some time, but Giancarlo Stanton is starting to look like the hitter he and the Yankees expect him to be.While the team’s offense is struggling mightily, Stanton crushed a two-run home run in the first inning of Friday’s loss to the Rockies. In doing so, the slugger gave the Yankees their only runs of the game. He added a double as well.Entering Saturday’s game, Stanton had 11 RBI and 11 hits in his last 11 games. He also totaled seven runs scored, three doubles and four homers over that span while registering a .290/.386/.684 slash line and just seven strikeouts.“He’s getting there,” Aaron Boone said Saturday afternoon. “It’s timing. It’s rhythm. It’s that subtle load that he has within his legs and his hands. So he’s getting into that good position to make a good swing decision.”Stanton has appeared far more comfortable at the plate than he did after first coming off the injured...Mets drop 4th straight despite Kodai Senga’s strong outing in loss to Dodgers

The Mets haven’t had much to celebrate this season, and there wasn’t much to celebrate Saturday night when they dropped their fourth straight, but the emergence of Kodai Senga is as promising of development as anything else in Queens right now.The Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Mets 5-1 at Citi Field in the second game of a three-game series, but it was no fault of Senga. The Japanese rookie gave the Mets six innings of one-run baseball and left with the game tied at 1-1.The loss was charged to right-hander Adam Ottavino (0-4), who struggled through the eighth inning but limited the damage to just one run. With runners on the corners and one out, the Mets couldn’t turn a 3-6-3 double play. Pete Alonso’s high throw to Francisco Lindor prevented them from getting the runner at first in time and allowed Max Muncy to score from third. The Mets (42-50) have scored only four runs over their last four games. They had runners on the corners in the eighth with none out...7 bodies pulled from flooded tunnel in South Korea as heavy rains cause flash floods and landslides

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korean rescue workers pulled seven bodies from a flooded tunnel where around 15 vehicles were trapped in muddy water, as days of heavy rain triggered flash floods and landslides and destroyed homes, leaving at least 33 people dead and forcing thousands to evacuate, officials said Sunday.Nearly 400 rescue workers, including divers, were searching the tunnel in the central city of Cheongju, where the vehicles, including a bus, were swamped by a flash flood Saturday evening, Seo Jeong-il, chief of the city’s fire department, said in a briefing.Photos and video from the scene showed rescue workers establishing a perimeter and pumping brown water out of the tunnel as divers used rubber boats to move in and out of the area.Yang Chan-mo, an official from the North Chungcheong provincial fire department, said it could take several hours to pump out all the water from the tunnel, which was still filled with 4 to 5 meters (13 to 16.4 feet) of water dense with m...One injured when shot in Christie and Dupont Streets area

By JILL COLVIN and STEVE PEOPLES (Associated Press)NEW YORK (AP) — He’s been indicted twice. Found liable for sexual abuse. And he’s viewed unfavorably by about a third of his party. But six months before Republicans begin to choose their next presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump remains the race’s dominant front-runner.Early leaders don’t always go on to win their party’s nomination, but a growing sense of Trump’s inevitability is raising alarms among some Republicans desperate for the party to move on. Some described a sense of panic — or “DEFCON 1,” as one put it — as they scramble to try to derail Trump and change the trajectory of the race. But there’s no clear plan or strategy on how to do that and Trump’s detractors aren’t rallying around a single alternative candidate yet.“They’re very concerned,” former Maryland Gov.
