McNeil was accused of making numerous fraudulent deals beginning in 2015, including the 2019 sale of a counterfeit card to a victim in Manhasset, New York, for $4,500, and a 2017 deal in which he traded two counterfeit cards for two authentic Tom Brady football cards.“Mr. McNeil defrauded sports memorabilia collectors of more than $800,000 by intentionally misrepresenting the authenticity of the trading cards he was peddling when, in fact, they were counterfeit,” Michael Driscoll, assistant director-in-charge of the FBI’s New York field office,...

Swarm of earthquakes at remote Alaska volcano signal unrest ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A swarm of earthquakes occurring over the past few weeks has intensified at a remote Alaska volcano dormant for over a century, a possible indication of an impending eruption. The Alaska Volcano Observatory raised the alert level to advisory status for Tanaga Volcano late Tuesday after the quakes became very vigorous.“We started seeing a whole lot of earthquakes occurring, one after the other, several per minute,” said John Power, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey stationed in Anchorage at the Alaska Volcano Observatory. There have been hundreds of small earthquakes, none larger than magnitude 2.75, but concentrated beneath the summit of the volcano, he said.“That indicates that we’re seeing significant unrest at the volcano,” Power said.“Whether or not this will lead to an eruption is something we can’t say at this point in time,” he said. “But we are concerned about it enough that we have gone and elevated the warning level.”While the ...

Nan Orrock, an Atlanta Democrat, said Wednesday that she and others filed complaints Tuesday with the IRS and the Office of Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.“WellStar should be held to account,” Orrock said at a news conference at the Georgia Capitol. “Wellstar should be required to repair the damage that it’s caused to this long-established system of care for the individuals formerly served by these facilities.”Based in suburban Marietta, Wellstar last November closed the 450-bed Atlanta Medical Center, a vital health care provider for many low-income residents, just months after closing the smaller Atlanta Medical Center So...

Why you still have to mess with daylight saving time in Colorado DENVER (KDVR) -- Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill to make daylight time permanent in Colorado in June 2022. Yet, the clocks still fell back in November. In 2023 we are once again about to spring forward. You would think Coloradans would be done with it forever, but that isn't the case.If you're sick of changing the clocks twice a year and are looking for some hope, you may be disappointed. What is daylight saving time, and what is standard time?Standard time is essentially the base in a given time zone, which, in Colorado, is the Mountain time zone. So, for the four months of the year daylight saving time is not in effect, Colorado is on Mountain Standard Time. When you spring forward your clocks in March, you join Mountain Daylight Time, which is just standard time plus one hour. The law signed by Polis last year would change the year-round standard time in Colorado to Mountain Daylight Time instead. Why isn't Colorado on permanent daylight time yet?Legally, Colorado cannot adopt dayligh...

Women's Day events highlight major gaps in gender equality MADRID (AP) — From demands for constitutional rights in Islamabad to calls for economic parity in Manila, Paris and Madrid, International Women’s Day demonstrations in cities around the world Wednesday highlighted the unfinished work of providing equity for half of the planet's population. While activists in some places celebrated political and legal advances, observances also pointed to repression in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran, and the large numbers of women and girls who experience sexual assaults and domestic violence globally.United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted this week that women’s rights were “abused, threatened and violated” around the world — and gender equality won’t be achieved for 300 years given the current pace of change. Progress won over decades is vanishing because “the patriarchy is fighting back,” Guterres said.Even in countries where women have considerable freedom, there have been recent setbacks. This was the first International W...
